Laser In-Situ Keratomilieusis (LASIK) is the current state-of-the-art surgical procedure to correct refractive errors. Dr. Reinstein utilizes the Excimer Laser to gently re-shape the curvature of the cornea so that it exactly matches the length of the eye. The Excimer Laser produces a cool beam of light energy that breaks the carbon bonds that hold the cells together. For each laser pulse, 39 millionths of an inch of tissue evaporates in 12 billionths of a second. The procedure requires only eye-drop anesthesia, and is totally painless. Dr. Reinstein uses a "microkeratome" to create a thin, protective flap on the surface of the cornea. This flap is then folded back, and the laser energy is directed onto the middle layers of the cornea. The average procedure removes about the thickness of a human hair and does so in approximately 30 seconds. The flap is laid back in place, and, after 2-3 minutes of 'drying' it adheres to the cornea. LASIK allows for both rapid healing and rapid recovery of vision. For these reasons, both eyes are usually treated on the same day. As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks involved, however LASIK is considered an extremely safe procedure. LASIK is considered the most accurate of all refractive surgical procedures, and the long-term stability of the result is excellent.

Dr. Reinstein has over 30 years of experience improving patients' vision and lessening or eliminating dependency on glasses with all types of refractive procedures.
